Isaac Johnston

Who are you and what did you do?

My name is Isaac Johnston. I am an Adventure Travel Photographer and Filmmaker.

How is your work space set up?

I work out of my house in an area with large windows that look out over the Swan River. It’s pretty informal with a few large prints of friends’ work. my desk and a couch.

What does your typical day look like?

I wake up at 7:45 and usually spend an hour drinking coffee and either thinking or reading. No phone or computer. This is the most important part of the day where I concept my ideas for photos and films or learn new skills from reading.

I then start my day with the most important task first. I don’t ever start with the most urgent. I find it really sets the tone for the rest of my day to get what is important done first. Urgent items can almost always wait for a few hours. I then go through my list I wrote at the end of the previous day item by item. I usually take a few hrs in the afternoon to play with my girls. I’ll finish work at usually around 7 pm. Sometimes earlier I finish my list, sometimes I’ll edit videos until 3 am if my flow is really strong.

The guiding principle here is to work when I’m effective at production. I won’t force it because of a clock. Work when work works ya know.

What hardware do you use to make your content?

I use a 2015 Apple Macbook Pro that has been upgraded over the years with a 27″ external monitor on my desk. The larger monitor really helps with video editing.

I will upgrade soon but try not to let new technology be an excuse to not create so I work with what I got until it really is causing me to be unproductive. This MacBook is starting to struggle with video though.

I also have an assortment of external hard drives to work off and back up my files.

What software?

Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop for photos, Apple Final Cut Pro 10 for video.
