Who are you and what did you do?
My name is Jeff Hyer and I’m a media/film student at the University of Montana. In addition to school, I currently run my own videography business which creates promotional videos for local business in the Flathead Valley. I also work remotely as the media content manager for Litiberi Travel, a tour operator based in Rome, Italy. I consider myself an obsessive creator who loves to experiment with film and photography as a hobby.
For the last 6 years, I’ve created promotional video for doctors, dentists, hotels, tour companies, dance shows, musicians, fitness facilities, environmentalist groups, schools, and more. Perhaps the most exciting video I’ve ever done was filming a shark cage diving experience for a tour operator in Cape Town, South Africa! And yes, I did get the chance to dive in the cage and see sharks up close!
What does your typical day look like?
During the school semester, my day is typically designed around my class schedule. During longer breaks and the summertime, my days revolves around my business. What’s nice about being a videographer is that I can design my own time, choose which jobs to take on, and I don’t have to be held to a 9-5 schedule.
When I’m working in Rome, my day typically goes as follows: I wake up at 4:30 a.m. and meet up with my employer and/or some tour guides and staff members that work at Litiberi Travel. We then do photoshoots and capture video content until 8:00 a.m in a new location in Rome every day. The reason why we do this so early is for optimal lighting and to avoid the crowds of the city. We love to gather content in front of the major sites of Rome as its most appropriate for tourism promotional uses, therefore we aim to capture the material well before any crowds start swarming in our shots.
How is your workspace setup?
Whether it’s video, photo, or web design I’m working on, my camera and computer are my main tools for creativity.
On a more literal note, I create my videos with my Nikon camera, my computer, and 2 terabytes of storage. I take these things almost everywhere I go so I’m always ready to work and edit. Because I travel a lot as a hobby and for work, I don’t have one single work space. Instead, I make my workspace light and portable and set up everywhere I go.
What hardware do you use to make your content?
I do most of my editing on IOS devices.
The softwares I use to edit video and photo are all within the Adobe Suite. At this point in time, the Adobe softwares are the standard editing applications in the media industry, therefore I believe it’s critical to be proficient at using them. They are each compatible with each other, making it very simple to create and edit content in all medias.
Where can people find you online?
To check out my media portfolio, I encourage people to explore out my website (lifeofhy.com). On my site, I have my videography portfolio, my photography portfolio, contact information, social media links, and personal blog. My instagram (@jeff_hyer) is also a great and fast way to explore my media content.
